This is a great piece of kit to add to any rig. It’s very hands on with minimal menu diving, and the splice integration is awesome. I’m not much of a producer, but this is similar to my circuit in that I can just sit down and start banging beats out to use in hybrid sets. You will need to use beat link trigger and carabiner if you have standalone pioneer gear that you would like to sync up with it (unless it’s compatible with Traktor or Serato) or use VIrtual DJ as it has Ableton Link, but it doesn’t do the HID integration as tight as Rekordbox DJ does with the XDJ 1000 MK2’s (no big surprise here). The synth engines are nice and work well with a lot of decent presets, you won’t replace your Komplete instruments from NI but I don’t think it’s meant to, yet. There are still some bugs Akai needs to work out, but nothing that will stop you from enjoying it fully, and with song mode and deep Ableton integration coming in the next update, I don’t see it moving from the center of my desk anytime soon.
One thing I will however note, is that it does not come with any software bundled. Most people will be ok with this, but there are some who will want Ableton as well. Myself, I’ve had it for 2 months now, and haven’t opened up ableton at all. I’ve ha4ly used my computer at all in regards to making music actually, just to choose which sounds I want from splice, I don’t even need to connect it to load the sounds I purchased, you can do it over wifi right from the user menu on the force.
